What is a "stall converter", like a "2200 stall" and why would I want one for my camaro?

Question:
I have a 350 and would like to get a th700 with a lock up. Would I want a 2200 stall converter for it? I don't plan to drag race, just street use and maybe autocross. Thanks

do you know where the mielage reader is on a Renault megane?

I own a transmission shop, and did you know this question has been addressed on here several times before? Stall doesn't mean what a lot of people thinks it does. Lets say you tied your car to a brick wall, and fixed the wheels to where they could not spin. When you floor the gas the engine will reach what speed before it stalls the engine? Hint: stall. If your engine makes most of its power between 2,800 and 4,500 rpm's, then you might want to get this power band up from a stock stall speed. The reason for this is to get the engine into its power band right out of the hole, instead of it start making power 60 feet down the track. Keeping the engine within its power band is very important if you want to get the car off the line, and down the track right away, or you can keep it stock, and wait for the engine to climb to its power somewhere down the track.
Glad to help out, Good luck!

Chevy Uplander mini van or wagon?

Big stall converters are really for drag racing so that you can launch at an optimal RPM with your automatic transmission. IF you just plan on using it for street and autocross, you probably don't need one. You'd be better served spending the money on suspension upgrades and such.

5-speed electronically controlled automatic?

your current torque comveter has a stall speed or 1200 to 1500 rpms...The car will start to move at that rpm..a 2200 or higher say a 4000rpm converter will not move till thar rpm..a drag race wants the car to move when the motor has the most horsepower/which is usually at a high rpm...it makes it harder to run on the street if you car doesnt move until you reach 4000rpm.
