Generally Mercedes Benz cars are known to be quite expensive when compare to other brand of cars. What is the reason for this?
Answers:
1.) They have a reputation as a premium brand, some may say a status symbol, so they are more expensive because they can be.
2.) Mercedes has always been a very engineering driven manufacturing often 3 or 4 years ahead of the more mainstream manufacturers to introduce new technology. Thus they higher unit costs in R&D
3.) MB's are built in less effecient plants in locations with higher costs of labor than some manufacturers
4.) They use premium parts. Look at the qualities of Mercedes interior plastics, the double pained glass, etc. All of this costs more.

They are classy, usually have a leather interior with many features on the dash board, the components are carefully crafted with more durable materials than your average car, they are powerful. If you can convince someone that they want a status symbol you can get them to pay anything. Mercedes Benz is part of Daimler Chrysler, and like all other car makers they use the same parts for a lot of cars.
Nissan and Infiniti are the same company, so you'll find Nissan engines, safety equipment, electronics etc in an Infiniti for more money.
As for the history of the company; Karl Benz invented many of the things we see on cars today, including: speed regulation system, the ignition using sparks with battery, the spark plug, the carburetor, the clutch, the gear shift, and the water radiator.

Engineering, safety, quality, fit and finish, etc. Go to a MB dealer and take a good look at an E class, a CLS, or an S class car. You'll see what I mean.In recent years (since the merger with Chrysler) quality has suffered because the decision was made to sell to the masses. The entry level C class cars are horrible. The ML class SUVs are not much better. But the E class and above cars are still high quality automobiles.

It is the same reason Toyota had to rebadge its top cars as Lexus, because they wanted to sell to the upscale car market or Infinity by Nissan. GM makes Cadillac for the same buyers.
