The last few cars I've bought are brand new Japanese superminis, costing about £9-10k. I have been happy with them, and they've been totally reliable, but I've toyed with the idea of spending a similar amount of money on a 3-4 year old BMW 320d. Is this a good idea, would such a car be as reliable, and are they as good to drive as some make out? Comments appreciated, thanks.

What you get in exchange is a much more substantial feeling car with thicker metal and paint, better quality plastics and a more solid overall feel to it. It will likely be safer and have a more composed ride than the cars you are used to and rear-wheel drive offers a more refined driving experience as well as better performance handling at the limits. The BMW direct injection diesels are brilliant. Very responsive motors with spadefulls of torque. I think you'll really enjoy it. If you have an eye for quality and detail and spend a lot of time in your car, it's worthy of serious consideration.

Yes. I have a 2004 BMW and I love it because it drives well, handles well, has a great warranty, I get a carwash everytime I need an oil change. BMW always worth the money that you pay for it,because it's reliable and well made car. For example 3-series compact is not very big and economic if you pick 320td. If you want some useful information and photos - check the site.

BMW are very good cars but not as reliable as a Japanese. I know, I have owned both. Why not look at a Lexus. Japanese reliability with all the luxury of the BMW. Even on an old Lexus everything will work and the car will feel a lot younger than it is. The only downside is, a set of tyres and exhaust could set you back £2,000 if bought together. They are worth the money but don't use the dealers as they are quite often snobs. Use a good independent for servicing as the BMW franchises charge massive rates!Make sure you get the car checked over thouroughly before purchasing & walk away if you have any worry whatever!

In my humble opinion No. A couple of friends owned 3-series beemers a few years ago both had problems with them, one to the point of a new engine. I drove both cars...from memory one was a 316 the other a 323 neither felt that special, in fact I used to get a "numb bum" in them after quite a short period of time. The seats were firm to the point of hard. Try a used Audi good cars with not such a "look at me" image, the 2.5 diesel is a great enginegreat cars. but be prepared to shell out the cash for maientance!, altho bmw now offers a great service program
