i have a mk6 escort with the button release tailgate. It sometimes works and mostly it doesn't, it makes the noise and releases the catch but then you can hear it lock again before you have a chance to lift the boot up! Where do i start?

it sounds like the complete latch is faulty, i suggest you take it to your local ford dealer. but before you do check the latch by looking at the contact plates see if they are dirty or excesssively corroded (if they are clean them with a bit of emery cloth) then check the little piston that makes the boot lift this is next to the plates i mention above with a screwdriver flat head if possible push down on it see if it goes down if it does spray some wd40 and try opening the boot as you have been doing. if fault is still there then what i said before about the whole latch being faulty would be confirmedI have an 82 bmw 320i and an 86 bmw 318. How much of the drive train from the 318 will fit the 320.?
While you are releasing the tailgate have someone lift it up. There should be a spring assembly that raises the tailgate just enough to clear the catch. That is either jammed or broken.
