Basically it is reasonably reliable (for a Ford) but that's about it.
Overall it's a mediocre SUV based on the old Ford Ranger chassis. It handles like a pig and has a very floaty ride. Gas mileage is so-so. Power is not great from the V6, but it's adequate. The part time 4x4 system sucks. You hit a spongey feeling button on the dash and if you're lucky 60-75% of the time it will CLUNK into 4WD after you're a mile down the road. Then you have to go in REVERSE to turn it off. Terrible system.

I would only recommend going with a 2WD Explorer or Mountaineer and then only if it's had all it's scheduled maintainance and regular oil changes down. In that case it might be a reasonable used car, but there are about 1000 other cars I'd choose first for the same money honestly.

If you really want an SUV almost anything Japanese would be a far better choice. Don't take my word for it though, drive them both back-to-back and you'll see.

Actually, a 1998 Mountaineer is a pretty good vehicle, and alot of value for your money. I have personally seen them with 150-200,000 miles with no major problems. The problem is finding one that was cared for and maintained by it's 1st owner. Both the V6 and the V8 are great engines. Good luck!what does the word GT stands for in cars ?

i own a repair shop,and actually there pretty good vehicles,,there real close to a ford explorer,,but yes it would make you a good first car ,either it or a jeep Cherokee either one would be a good choice,,bur if you find one look it over real good,,and be sure that's what you want,,good luck with it,,i hope this help,s.yes because it protects you if you crash because it is a strong suv and if its well equpped go for it but always ask for the car's history...if its salvaged or had problems b4 and the receipts of the services that were performed on that car
