What engine can go into a 1999 chevy malibu?

I am considering replacing the engine in my car and need to know what other year engine will fit. It is a 3.1 Liter currently.

Also consider that the vehicles PCM (computer) will only run a 3.1 and finding replacements that will work on a Malibu are going to be hard to come by if not nonexistent.
