Question:
I recently bought a '94 Grand Am, and it drives pretty nicely and has been doing so for the past month. Yesterday I came to a stop at a red light and the breaks I noticed made a few big "thuds" just before stopping. At the next light, the same "thuds", and then upon trying to go again the gas pedal was harder to push and the car wouldn't go anywhere. Even though the gas pedal would hardly go down and car wouldn't move, we were able to push it to the side of the road.
Once on the side of the road we checked the oil and everything seemed okay, waiting a bit, then got back in and it was fine the rest of the day.

Any ideas what went wrong? I'd like to think it was just a small one time occurance, maybe the breaks got stuck? I know nothing about cars so figured I'd ask here...

ABS Automatic brake system. I would have the brakes checked to see if there is an electrical, or brake line problem.

May not be a brake problem at all, but could be the transmissions Torque Convertor lock.Look under the hood at transmission and you will see a blue colored electrical connector.Disconnect this and see if you still have the same problem.This will not harm the vehicle.sounds to me like the abs brake system is engaging, does the abs dash lite come on? try to determine where noise is from. listen, carefully touch the brake to see if warmer than others, most likley a front sensor. due to time and rust better off to replace the hum assembly.
Maybe if you asked it in the Pontiac section instead of the GMC room you'd get a good answer! (GMC ? as in Yukon, Envoy, etc)
