I once owned a 1979 Cutlass, with the 260 you're mentioning. I'm sure a lot of tinkering could be done, but when I cracked my block, ( I suspect it was cracked when I bought it ) I went to a dismantler, and had them drop in a rebuilt 350, and it ran like a dream. It cost me $880.00 including installation. It might cost a bit more these days.
By the way, rebuilts are just as good as new engines, but you only get a thirty day warranty. They always last well beyond that. Hope this helps.
