If you're looking for the best in everything, I would recommend the E class, It offers the most for the money, luxury, performance, looks. If you have money, go for the CLS or S class.

The cars range from large powerful and very fast limousines through swank personal vehicles which are smaller, right down to small cars. They make cars specially for the taxi market too.

The four door sedans range from the S-class which are the most expensive and largest, the E class which are a bit smaller and less expensive on average, the C class which again are conventional four door sedans and smaller again and a bit less expensive on average. Then there is the R class which is a sort of people mover and the A class which is a very unconventional 4 door sedan with most of the mechanicals below the floor. The ML is a luxury four wheel drive with some off road ability, the GL class is the real off-road deal and is based on a military vehicle. They make a line of sports cars and coupes mostly based on the C class. Each type of car may be had with two or more different sizes of petrol engine, they also make diesel engines for several of the models.
Several years ago they bought out a German business called AMG which did hot-ups on several of their models and now they offer AMG versions of many of their models beside the "regular" ones at a higher price.

Unless I was only doing city driving I would not get less than the 3. liter V6. At least for gasoline engines. Mercedes makes a strong 2.7liter Diesel but that is as small as I would go unless you only intend to use the car for in town transportation.
For a daily comuter I would look at either an A or B class TDI/CRD Diesel.
I like fast cars but do not want to spend allot on gas and the 320 does just fine. Plenty of power and fairly good on gas.
