I have a 1.8T GLS Jetta and I love it. Although, I was really wanting a GLI because the suspension is upgraded and it has some exterior extras that make it really nice. But whichever you choose, the 4 or 6 cylinder, the price will vary. The 1.8T is rated at 180 horsepower and the 6 is about 200 from what Ive heard. My car's gas mileage is about 24-28 depending on how much highway vs in city driving I do. The GLX is going to have more interior options included as well as premium wheels, etc. The GLS has good wheels but mine has cloth interior instead of leather. The GL is the base model and won't have very many options. But note that you can get a VR6 in the GLS or GLX packages. Just because its a VR6 doesnt mean its automatically a GLX. What Ive explained is for the MK4 models. If you want more information, check out www.vwvortex.com they have a lot of info and pictures from members.gls
