Answers:
Is it un-American to drive a Toyota or Honda even though they have factories in the U.S.?
I own a transmission shop, and a "74" Chevy with 700 R-4 in it. I made my own with a welder and an old bracket I got off a junk vehicle. I have seen them on the market for sale, made for this application. I believe it was in either the Jegs or summit catalog. You can contact TCI, the transmission and parts supplier, and they can hook you up with what you need to make it work. They have the arm for the carburetor, and the bracket to attach the cable to. It is set up on a one to one ratio. Meaning the travel on the arm on the carburetor travels 1" and the pull on the end of the cable should be 1". There is a slot to move the connector up and down to adjust this. Look around and you will find the one I'm talking about.Glad I could help you. Good Luck!
Part 2:
Check a company named "Locar", as this may be it.
Also FYI, my "74" came with a kick down (detent) cable from the factory, and a turbo 350 transmission. I'm thinking your "86" transmission is a 700? If it is a 350 then you should be able to find what you need in a junk yard pretty easy. If it's a 700 then you will have to either make one, or purchase one. I used an old bracket that the cable would fit in, sawed it off, and welded it to my bracket that was already there. I had to modify the linkage arm on the carburetor to get it to a 1:1 ratio before the transmission would shift right. If you don't get this corrected, it WILL burn the transmission out! You cannot just drive it with the cable unhooked, as it will damage the transmission after a while.
Either TCI or Locar can point you in the right direction as far as the set up you need to correct this issue.
I have a built 700 R-4 transmission, a built 350 engine in my truck, and the low first gear, along with the 3.73:1 positive traction rear end, makes the truck come out of the hole like a bull dog. I can run in the high 6's and low 7's all night long at the 1/8 mile track I run at. This ain't bad for a full metal body pick up. Good Luck!
you gotta use a newer throttle linkage its the only way as long as its a rochester carb it should work, if its not then go to your local parts store and ask for a carb linkage adaptor kit, oreilly's and advance have em i'm not sure about autozone
