What would cause my 2000 Ford Taurus to stall/die while I'm driving?

Question:
It's actually my mom's car but I'm just curious. We're going to take it to a mechanic today but I'd really like to know what you mechanics out there think. Here's what's happened so far:
1. It has been difficult to start--didn't start on first try, started on second (this happened for about 2 or 3 months according to mom)
2. About a week ago, it stopped starting on the second start. It's pretty chilly here so I thought the weather was a factor--as it would often start once the temperature outside increased (mom thought it was out of gas-but it wasn't)
3. Two days ago, my sister and I filled the car up, added some gas treatment, and drove around for a while (it gave us a few problems at first but once we drove it around a while it seemed fine)
4. Yesterday and today, the car starts on the first try (mumbles a bit--shakes) then dies. It starts on the second try, then dies. Around the 3rd or 4th try it starts and (if I keep my foot on the gas) makes this knocking sound.

There are some more you need to do, check with the mechanic and they will give you more info. On your fourth one, it sounds like you have problem with the spark splug and wire. If I was you, I will take the car to local mechanic to get it check up. I know it will cost more then $1500 +, but can't tell you with out looking at the car. also your air solinoid maybe didn't work or just need to clean it.

its either fuel or spark related - most likely a fuel pump problem, fords have a tendency to have weak fuel pumps after they get about 100k miles on them. they shouldnt ask more than about 500 including labor. it could also be a stopped up fuel filter - about 50 with labor. or spark plugs or spark plug wires. the antifreeze doesnt sound like its that big of a deal - you may have a small crack in the hose.

Either your battery is dead or dying, your starter motor could be going bad, or your alternator needs to be replaced.

Start with the cheapest solution first -- get the battery checked out.

If your battery does not need to be replaced, then have the starter and alternator checked. You can have all three done at the same time.

PLUS, you have a broken coolant hose that you need to replace PRONTO, or your car will overheat and really cause you major problems,

sounds like it could be a vacuum hose or a Mass Air flow sensor? Geez, with the Taurus there are so many things. O2 sensor? The antifreeze deal sounds like a separate issue, but needs to be fixed. I would say it is a sensor of some sort. Tell them you want the codes pulled from the computer and you want them to look it up in the book and tell you what they are. That way they will at least think you are knowledgeable and wont take you for a ride.

Sounds like your idle air solinoid is sticking A new one cost around $70.00 and is easy to change.

see the also bad thing is that 2000 was when the new version of the Taurus came out, and always the new versions of a car the initials are always bad; I've had first had knowledge of this car having problems; my uncle had the same year one and he had nothing but problems, but all the later years cars are a lot better
