What is wrong with my Volvo S40?

Question:
I have a Volvo S40, 2000 model. I already had the ECT sensor replaced, but the other day, it acted weird. All of a sudden, the car seemed to be stuck on a gear. It was hesitating when i was braking, felt like it still wanted to go. So I pulled over and when I put the car in Park, the engine revved to 5000 rpm. I shut the car down, and when I tried to re-start, it would not start. The temp gauge indicates overheating, but that could not be possible.

Check the coolant level frst. If this isn't it then the next step is to replace the thermostat. Also make sure that you have enough oil in it too. All the other causes will definately require professional diagnosis. Good Luck.

I know nothing about cars and saw your post whilst I was asking advice about mine. But in reading about mibe it sounds maybe that the alternator regulator is giving guff. The redulator controls the power that comes out of the alernator. If it's on its way out, you would have too much power. I really dont understand the details but it just sounds possible as per your description. Visit to the garage (if it's near by) I'm thinking.

It sounds like you might have a stuck or defective throttle position sensor. You also might have a sticking throttle or gas pedal linkage problem. Investigate further. Maybe your carpet is wedged under the gas pedal holding the throttle partially open.

The Volvo's of today have lots of problems due to Ford quality. It sounds like the throttle control is sticking. You need to take it to an authorized dealer because of the way Ford has things set up now. Volvo's can only be really diagnosed by a dealer with the proper diagnostic equipment. Unless your mechanic has all of the proper diagnostic tools.

Greetings - This Volvo was designed long before Ford got involved with Volvo, so we cannot blame them. I had a 2000 V40 for a few years, and the 2000's have more problems than the later year cars since they were the first year the model was introduced into the US.

I would still recommend taking it to the dealer. I suspect it might be a software problem, or a problem with the fuel/throttle system. Good luck.
