It looks like the Cherokee, but that's about it. It is based off the Dodge Caliber. Is it as trail ready as a Cherokee? Doubt it, even though it is "Trail Rated". But, as long as you are ok with that that want to look the part, then it wouldn't be a bad little 'ute. I've been waiting for something to replace my XJ with too. Unfortunately, the Patriot is not the replacement for the Cherokee. It's actually based on the Dodge Nitro. Chrysler is in financial trouble right now and can't really dedicate to much into developing a new truly trail ready vehicle like they used to. (Even though they do have a few promising concepts ie. Rescue, Hurricane) GM is looking into buying Chrysler. Rumor is that they will pair Hummer with Jeep as an offroad branch. We'll see what happens then. For now I will stick to my faithful XJ if not maybe a Wrangler with a hard top.Do Toyota make a Rav4 diesel with auto gearbox?
I used to own a Cherokee and just bought the Patriot a few weeks ago. I love it and think it is much roomier than most SUV's of it's size - much better then the 4-Runner. My boyfriend who is 6 ft 2 has more then enough room in the front and back seats. It is built on a car frame - but the ride is great and the gas mileage is better then most in it's class. Mine is definitely for city driving - but they are supposed to be available with a pretty decent off-road package.The Jeep Patriot and the Jeep Compass are the complete bastardization of all that the Jeep name stands for.. as well as the 4 door wrangler.

I build Patriots everyday. There are not any major bugs that I know of, trust me word flies around the plant like you wouldnt believe. They are built on the same platform as the Caliber and Compass, but there is a big difference. Especially in the Trail Rating. I dont think it can do what a Wrangler can do. But it will get you through snow and mud. I have mine on order. I cant wait to get it!! I had to order mine because I have to compete with everyone else at the plant who wants one. Its very hard to get one around here, you have to fight for them.They are not built on the Nitro platform, those come from the Liberty plant. They are very nice vehicles, and they come out of the best plant in the US. They are only built in the US! They didnt cheapen out on it, they built it to be a Jeep. They took alot of time to put this one out, they wanted it to be perfect. It is supposed to be our biggest seller.

Chrylser is not in that much financial trouble, they are not being sold, its all because its a contract year, and they dont want to give us anything. They start developing cars years before they actually come out. So the time and money thing is not true. They spent millions rebuilding our plant to build these. GM will never own Chrylser, and even if they did it would still be 2 separate companies that would just share the tech costs.
