Question:
My 2000 323i has in the past week had the "service engine soon" light come on, then go off, then come on, and now its off and has not come back on again. I recently had the oil changed (within the past 2 weeks) and everything seems to be running fine.
Should I take it in and have them hook it up for the code? Will the code even pull if the light is not on?
Any advise would be very helpful!
Thanks for your time : )

I have the same car.Can anyone help me find me some running boards for purchase.?
Check your gas cap to make sure it is on tight (twist it until it clicks.) This is a common problem with modern cars, when the emissions control system checks for any vacuum leaks in the fuel system. If this is the problem, then it will take several more driving cycles (ignition on & off) to clear the fault code.

If this is not the problem, then have the BMW dealer or independent BMW mechanic download the fault code. And yes, the codes are stored in the computers memory. I forgot how many, but I think at least 5 are stored.

If you want to pull your own codes, take a look at this tool from Peake Research. I have one and use it to read the fault codes and reset the oil and inspection indications.

you can take it to auto zone ,and they,ll pull the code up for free, its a better way to find out what it is,,but yes it will still bring it up,,even if the light is not on,,the computer retains the trouble code in its memory,,until it is cleared back off again,,good luck hope this help,sHow do i go about putting a fuel pump in a 1988 mustang lx 2.3L auto?
Not all Fault Codes will trigger the CHECK ENGINE LIGHT to come ON. The CHECK ENGINE LIGHT ON indicates there is an emissions Fault. Burned out light bulbs or low oil level or cold coolant level are not directly related to EMISSIONS problems. The Fault CODES that get set should remain in memory for a certain amount of time, before being erased. After the car has been driven for ONE DRIVE CYCLE, and there have been no more repeats of a "set" Fault Code, the CHECK ENGINE light may remain off. There are lots of interconnecting Fault Codes and priorities that can cause the CHECK ENGINE light to come on.does anyone know how i can build a chevy small block 350 to perform as well as a big block?
I HAVE A LEXUS MY CHECK ENGINE LIGHT JUST CAME ALSO.I HAVE PUT IT IN THE SHOP TWICE.THEY SAID IT WAS AN OXYGEN SENSOR AND NOT TO WORRY ABOUT IT.TomSJ has it right. I have BMW 330i 2003 and the check engine light comes on and off sometimes as well. I noticed it depends on the fuel level. When its full it is OK, but comes on 3/4 full, then goes away, then reappears at 1/4 full. Strange!! The dealer told me even before I bought the car that the gas tank vaccum sensor in BMWs are problematic and I might experience this problem. Try very lighly lubricating the rubber seal of the gas tank cap or getting a new one. I can't say this will work for everyone, but it seemed to work for me. Generally, if you have another problem the check engine light should stay on.
