I've a 94 e320 Mercedes-Benz which has a smart-card reader fixed in it can anyone help whats the use of it?

Question:
there are no phone buttons in the car.And nothing is connected to the reader but a small speaker(speaks japanese :))and another wire that goes somewhere under the panel.
