Well to say they are reliable is quite the strech. since 98 the new beetle has been ranked the worst new car in america by 3 different consumer companies for 7 consecutive years: JD power, Consumer Reports, Consumer Affairs.The last few years has been better, but they are ranked 47 out of 49 vehicles tested (reliability)
The common problems (technical service bulletins) include oil consumption due to oil cooler, multiple electrical issues including:guages going haywire, dashboard lights lighting up with no problems, faulty window regulators, range distance on power lock remote, brake/turn signal bulbs burning out due to a short, hatch not opening due to faulty cables, head gaskets leaking, fautly maf, thermostat, brake lights turning on for no reason, (faulty switch) (it may also cause the brake pedal to stick to the floor), ses light caused by a crack in the secondary air pump housing, inaccurate speedometer reading, premature brake pad wear, hesitation caused by:
# (Engine Control Module) ECM ground connection.
# Injection pump timing.
# broken or cracked Vacuum hoses.
# EGR valve and intake manifold air flap (integrated in EGR valve).
# MAF sensor and EGR valve including solenoid valve.

The electricals are a bad joke,the transmissions are worse...and try to find the spark plugs! Stay away,far away.supposedly there were electrical issues in the 1998-2002 bugs, i have a 2001 and i have had absolutely no problems whatsoever. i also have a 2007 Volkswagen beetle convertible, which is also a great car. They have both been very reliable. Take care of you car, and it will take car of you.
There were some problems with electrical issues [power windows, etc] and also specifically with the Turbo New Beetles, which had pronounced problems with the ignition coil. VW recalled & replaced all of these faulty coils on all of their cars equipped with the 1.8T.
