Former e28 owner of an '88 528e. I was into reading alot about e28 and e30 model BMW's. I thought only the early e28's - '82, 83 and perhaps 84 had the soldered in chips and all the later cars had sockets. I would suspect then your i car has a pluggable chip. Take the cover of your ecu and take a peak.
