The rotary has had its issues in the past (like the one guy said with the RX-7) but this engine has changed. The most important part of the rotary engine is the apex seal, as mentioned. Oil is not 'downed' but it is used, amounts depend on how it is driven.There are oil injectors that inject a small amount of oil in to be used and therefore, oil must be checked often. The rule is every two tanks of fuel. Your driving style may be different and you could get away with 3 tanks. Always a good idea to look anyway.
There are only 3 moving parts in a Wankel rotary, and if treated properly and maintained, it should run for years and years. There is an RX-8 owner in Australia with 190000km on his, that is the highest mileage I have seen so far. Hard to tell, as the car is still pretty new (2003-present)...
Not to say there arent any that havent had their issues. The Wankel is a proven power source, and unfortunately earned a bad rap some gens of the 7 due to blowing up (damn turbo's.. lol).
Redlines are important (which is great news for your right foot). Keep the carbon down and change those plugs at regular intervals.
While not the most powerful car on the road, its superb handling is like no other I have ever driven in my many years on the road. A 350Z will take it, but guaranteed you will turn alot more heads and hey... you can have three passengers, not 1.
If you buy a used one, make sure all recalls are up to date. There have been several, one major, several minor.
Get one, and enjoy it.. its a trip.

The thing with the RX8 is that you have to drive it hard every now and then. Rev high and stuff. It can't be a car that gets driven like a Buick.

this was true in the early 13b rotary that came in the RX7. the main problem you hear about is the apex seals. if you have ever looked inside a rotary engine, there is a big 3 point rotor inside. on the points on the rotor there are seals that contact the walls of the combustion chamber (its all one big chamber in there). a good illustration of the rotary (also known as the wankel) can be found here http://www.keveney.com/wankel.html... . so anyways, mazda has upgraded these seals and they do last longer. so far i havent heard as many complaints of them failing around 60,000 miles. the rx8 is underpowered in my opinion. having driven a few, they are a failed attempt of a sports car. mazda also recalled 2004, 2005, and some 2006 models for engine problems.Why are all the lights on the dashboard of my 2001 Pontiac sunfire coming on?

No if you are someone that is maticulous with the maintanence of a vehicle. YOU MUST CHANGE THE OIL EVERY 3K MILES! You MUST ADD OIL EVERY OTHER TANK OF GAS! The reason you hear they break down is that idiots buy them and do not maintain them! I work for Mazda and see them with 100's of thousands of miles but they are TAKEN CARE OF!
