i own a shop,and there's only about 25 things that could cause that light to come on,anything from leaving the gas cap loose to having a faulty sensor will cause it to come on,there's no way anyone can tell you exactly what it is until it has been scanned ,and then the computer will tell whats causing this to happen ,until then everyone can guess at it and I'm sure someone will eventually guess it right,all we do here is guess at things anyway,sometimes you get lucky,no one knows exactly whats wrong with every vehicle they answer a question on though,if we could do that ,we wouldn't be here answering questions,we,d all be rich and famous,good luck with it.How do you find a gear ratio on a 1991 chevy pickup?

It could actually be something as little as a spark plug mis-firing. (really cheap)Or it could just be a sensor which are expensive but you can live with out a sencor.

I would take it to auto zone and tell them you need an electrical test. They will tell you what is wrong.

The oxygen sensor(s) is a common "check engine light" problem, but it could be anything from a missing gas cap upward. (The missing gas cap will actually trigger that light.)Instead of a mechanic, you may want to take the car to a local chain auto parts store (AutoZone in my neighborhood) which will put a diagnostic tool on the car for free. This may tell you what you're up against quicker (and cheaper) than a mechanic. Good luck!
