Max tire size on stock axles?

Question:
I have a '97 Ram 1500 with a 5.2L engine. I want to know how big can I go in tire size before I have to upgrade the stock axles. I want to put a 5" lift and 35" tires. Should I change axles now or can I get away with re-gearing the stock axles?

I used to have a 98 ram with 9" lift and 40's and never had any problems. When I put the lift on the truck i was told not to go above 36's on the factory axles but i didnt have the money to replace them so i just changed the gears to 4.11 and never had any problems.
