Whats better the NEW 6.4 or the POWERFUL 7.3 DIESEL ENGINE?

My son has a 1992 dodge dakota that is backfiring when he starts it in the morning and we need help?


Just wondering how good is that 6.4 f-250 diesel engine and if its better than the CLASSIC 7.3 I know the 6.0 was just a huge mistake by ford but did they correct all of those mistakes if the 6.4 any opinions will be great thanks and have a nice day

It is still too early to tell you how reliable the new 6.4L diesel will be on the '08 Super Duty F-series trucks. Yes the rumours you are hearing about the need to remove the cab from the frame of the truck to service is true unfortunately. What I CAN tell you is, it is MUCH smoother and quieter than the 7.3L (assuming you are referring to a '95 to '03 7.3L DIT). This is to be expected of course. However, it is also MUCH more complex, and therefore MUCH more expensive should the need for repair arise. If you are in the market for a truck, you are better off buying a good used 2002 or 2003 model year truck for now, until the bugs are worked out of this new model, which is to be expected of ANY newly released product. Just for your information, Navistar has ALWAYS been the manufacturer and supplier of the diesel engines for Ford's light duty trucks, since it's introduction to the market in 1983.

I would hope the 6.4L is better. With all the trouble that Ford is having, I don't think they need that kind of publicity. I did hear from a friend that work exclusively on International/ Navistar engines, he said that any major work in reguards to the engine (i.e. overhauls, head work, ect) would require the removal of the cab. If that is true, then it better be reliable.

It's supposed to be more powerful and cleaner but will cost more to maintain just in the fact that new emissions laws are in effect in the US. (and yes it's true about the cab... All Ford did was legitamize something Ford dealers were doing for years already with the 6.0 to gain access to the motor.. the 6.4 is even tighter and this is the only way to do it now)

The IDI with turbo (93-94.5)

Its too early to tell at this point. A negative is there is a problem with fords programing that is telling the diesel particulate filter (DPF) to regenerate while the vehicle is off, resulting in a two foot flame out of the exhaust pipe. The 94.5-03 7.3l is very reliable and takes a lot of abuse. The 6.4 arcitecture is very similar to the 6.0l. Believe it or not in 2002 I took a factory tour of the DT466 plant in chicago and had saw the 6.4l in the engineering test area, apparently they have been experimenting for quite some time. I also noticed a 6.0/6.4L bi-turbo engine on the prototype dyno. Interesting stuff.
