Is there a definite Ring Gear/Axle Spline on a 1994 Chevy Cheyenne 1500 with a 4.3L engine and a 4L60E trans?

Question:
Everything that I haven't changed myself is stock. I know the newer trucks come with different rear axles but I don't know about a 1994. I'm looking at Positrac and I have to know what gearing I have.

Chevrolet's stamp a number on the axle tube on the drivers side of the vehicle that identifies the gear ration in the housing. There is a tag on one of the cover bolts that tells what type of gear oil to run in it, if it is a posi-traction rear end. If you can get this code off the tube, and go to www.nationaldrivetrain.com or Richmond Gear web site, you will find a place in the technical section that can identify the rear end you have. The best and safest way to do this is to remove the cover, and the ratio is stamped right on the ring gear. This way you won't be guessing, and you can measure the diameter of the ring gear, and how many bolts it has mounting it to the carrier. I have seen some that were different than what was on the tube, due to someone had put different gears in the housing when they repaired a bad bearing. I wouldn't take a chance on it. I would pull that cover, and see what is in there. I build a lot of rear ends for myself and other customers, so to be honest with you, the only true way to know, is to look in there on the ring gear.
A tag on the pumpkin is refering to a Ford rear end, as Chevrolet's don't use the pumpkin style, they build the assembly inside the housing. A Ford rear end comes out as an assembly, and has a tag on one of the studs that identifies the ratio, where as GM does it differently.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!
