All Bimmers drain electricity - clock, alarm, etc. How bad is your car losing it's charge? Easy way to find out, disconnect the negative on the battery and just brush it against the battery post. If you get a big spark, you got a big drain going on somewhere, maybe a short. If you only have a very small spark, it's normal. That means the battery isn't charging between starts. Could be 2 reasons, the alternator is shot or the battery is old. When was the last time you had a new battery? 3 to 5 years is about all you'll get out of one, depending how many times a day you start the car. (Some batterys will give you 7 to 10 years, but not the factory installed ones) If it's a fairly new battery, probably the alternator. If you can get to a "Tire & Battery" outlet of some kind, they have instruments that will tell you exactly what it is. It measures starting amps, cranking amps, charge capacity, battery charge, etc. Also specific gravity, etc.

Also, check to see if there is water in the battery cells. Lots of times, the water evaporates out and it just needs to be topped off - use distilled water.

Still another problem can be corrosion. I've seen cars not able to start, scrape the corrosion off the battery terminals, and the car starts right up. Could also be if it's corroded, the alternator can't charge the battery - the corrosion acts like an insulator.

One last thing I've seen, but rare, is the wire attached to the starter itself is corroded or loose. Just clean it up and retighten.

It might take a few stabs at the problem to get it right - you can see it's not just a black or white problem. It could be a combo of any of these problems. Best thing to do is 'preventative maintenance'. (I know it's too late for that :-)

If your car won't start because the battery isn't charged enough to turn the engine over, then why don't you buy a battery charger or take the battery out and get it charged. If the engine won't turn over even with a fully charged battery, then you will have to figure out why it is locked up or "frozen". What kind of car is it, and which transmission does it have?

If you find your alternator condition is good and battery condition is good then the culprit is the v-belt connecting engine pulley and alternator pulley.Check for the slack and any oil spillage which leads to slippage of the belt and in turn it will not rotate the alternator ,so that the battery will not charge.It there is slack tighten it and if any oil spillage wipe in properly.
