The 5.0L (302) used in the F-series trucks of that era have a different engine firing order (1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8) as well as a different intake manifold. The 5.0L H.O. (302) used in Mustang applications is also SEQUENTIALLY fuel injected, meaning fuel is delivered to each individual cylinder in the same order as the engine's ignition firing order (which incidently, is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8), as opposed to the "batch" fire system utilized on the truck applications. The reason for the different firing order was due to the high output application in the Mustang, Ford wanted to reduce loading on the front of the crankshaft by eliminating cylinder number 5 firing after number 1. This also mandated the use of different camshafts, with different lift and duration specs. to suit its intended applications.
