its complicated, but I buy old muscle cars with out titles. In Indiana, one could go down to the State Office Building at the Vehicle Title Division, and apply for a vehicle title history [cost .50 cents per copy]. If there are no liens or legal problems then you find the last owner, go to his address and have him sign three power of attorneys [a slip of paper that you get from your local license branch] and with those power of attorneys, you can take the to the license branch and request a duplicate title sent to your house. When you get the duplicate then use the other power of attorneys to change title from his name to yours. It really helps if you know a notary republic. The seller will have to file for a lost tittle from their DMV. There is always a chance that this vehicle is stolen. If it is, the cops will find it, seize it, arrest you for receiving stolen vehicle, loose your money, and do jail time. OR, they might have the tittle, sell it to you then report it stolen.
