I own a shop, and have worked on vehicles for many years. There are too many reasons no one can help you. The best advice is to take some pictures of the engine front, top, side, and rear, and post them to where we can look at them. It is just anybodies guess at the moment. Being a mechanic you know that numbers are meaningless if you don't have some other clues to go by. A lot of times, you can go by the type of components that are attached to the engine, where the distributor is located, brand of distributor (Delco= GM, Fomoco= Ford), brand of starter, and even the brand of fuel delivery system on it. There is just not enough information to make the call. My bet is; it's out of a boat!Part 2:
After I thought about it; that number does sound like a GM cylinder head casting number, as they do start with 14..

where you got the engine from might be a good place to start. what car did it come from, and usually the make is written on the top of the engine if not in letters you should see a symbol....considering a Scion XB... any input would be valuable. Thanks!?

That is probally part of the vin number. You could go to thechevy web site and ask them. They might be able to tell by the number. Some custom engines are recasted.

How old do you suspect it is? It could be a GM motor and not be a Chevy. Buick built their own V6 for a long time 231 ci, or 3.8 liter.Chevy V6s were 2.8, 3.1, 3.4, 3.8, 3.4 liter. The 3.4 is a 305 or 5.0 liter missing two cylinders. The 4.3 is a 350 5.7 liter missing two cylinders. They will not bolt up to the bell housing of the 2.8 or 3.1.
Is it from a front drive or rear drive? Older GM front drive motors had the starter on the left side when standing behind it. rear drives were on the right if you stand behind it.
Is it distributor less ignition?
Is it injected or carb?
If it is injected is it TBI or multi port?
Is it 60 degree or 90 degree?

How do check to see if a timing belt is bad?
Take a couple of digital pictures of the engine, and post them on the Edmunds.com forums.If its from an American-market car, someone there will recognise it.
if its a chevy lump, it will have "GM" somewhere on the block. normally on the rear near the gearbox mount flange. check for more casting numbers/letters and repost them. i have lots of gm info books, will check for you..
