I've heard of 2 catalytic converters, but never more than that. Does anyone know if it's true that a Montero has 3 cats?

yes, there are cars with 3 catalytic converters. If they're constantly being replaced, then something else is causing the catalytic converters to wear out prematurely. The cause of the problem must be found. Find another mechanic if your friend has to, because a knowledgeable and professional mechanic always looks for the reason why the converter failed early.
