They are a joke on a sedan except for this - with some models it is difficult to estimate where the rear of the car is while looking through the rear window. The spoiler is a good marker. At least that was what Dave said, he reckoned it would stop his wife reversing into things. You'll have to ask him whether it worked.

On cars that go less than 155mph, it only has to do with looks.
On cars that go over 155, like Porsche, and other high end performance cars, the spoiler keeps them from flipping over or flying from the air lifting the car up. The spoiler makes downforce to push the car down on the floor and it also helps with aerodynamics on some cars.

Other than looks it helps the car get better traction and it helps you increase speed on curves. All spoilers do this put the bigger the better.
