2002 jeep liberty,tailgate won't open when key is turned,some times it will open, sometimes not.?

The exterior handle on the tailgate has a faulty switch. Common problem with the liberty's. You need a new tailgate exterior handle.

When the tailgate will not open what do you hear from the lock? does it sound like it is loose? do you hear some rattling? then something is loose on the back of the lock cylinder. you might want to check out a haynes or chiltons manual to see how to remove the lock and look for any problems
