and now I found out my car is not a VTEC engine
a D16Y8, isn't it suppose to be a VTEC
I saw my engine is a D16Y8 too
I bought the car from a Russian....

Civic EXs do not have VTEC motors. The EX series was produced more cheaply without VTEC; the Civic VTI model has VTEC.the d16y8 motors are vtecs. the reason you might not be able to feal the vtec kick is that it's a small, low hp engine and the vtec mode may not make that big of a difference.

It is a VTEC, Honda made a variety of VTEC types. For example the Civic HX was VTEC-E, tuned for higher mpg, and on the EX, it has VTEC only on the intake side, not the exhaust. In other words, since it is a SOHC motor, and not a DOHC (dual cam) like Prelude H22 and Integra GS-R and Type R, B18 it is not tuned for as much power from the factory.The EX does come with VTEC, but its only a SOHC maybe thats why you cant feel it when it kicks, cuz its so small.
EX'S DONT COME WITH VTEC MOTORS. ONLY THE SI MODELS. IF YOUR ENGINE'S VALVE COVER ONLY SAYS HONDA THAT MEANS YOU GOT SCREWD IF YOU THOUGHT YOU WERE BUYING A VTEC. YOU PROBALBLY HAVE THE B16 CAUSE THEY CAME MAINLY IN THE EX MODELS.
