Better motor to build?

Question:
looking for advice on which motor would be better to build achieving a goal of 300 to 400 bhp. a. 1969 302 out of a f-100 or a 91' 5.0 HO motor, cause the HO is a roller block, but not as strong as the 69 block?. Are roller blocks that much better?

Making 400HP on a modern 5.0 HO platform is no problem at all. There are readily available stroker kits that will give you that # right out of the box. For that HP range, I wouldn't hesitate to go with the '91...it won't be a problem to find parts for either motor, but there are more "modern" parts available for the HO...fuel injection manifolds, heads, etc...

the 91 5.0 motor will be far easier. 5.0s are very moddable compared to the old 302s (i know theyre the same size). Should be able to get there with a pretty simple supercharger setup and a few goodies like some cams and maybe some head work. Truck motor=bad starting place anyways. Youll essentially have to start with just the block.

The roller blocks are good and 400hp is realistic . The draw back to the factory rollers is they are heavy and 5500 rpm is about as high as they go with out help from stronger springs to keep them on the lobes.

A well built 347 stroker motor naturally aspirated will produce around 400hp. That's a fuel injected 5.0 . parts are easy and cheap and are available everywhere. The best bang for the buck bar none. Plus a great platform for a later project. You don't have to stop there if you don't want.

The '69 will be a better motor because you have a much more solid block. You can put roller cams, roller rockers, etc to make it a roller engine. It'll be worth it and cost about the same. You can put a 351W cam in it which changes the firing order which improves the performance (more HP).

5.0 has a 2bolt main but companies such as DDS and jegs etc make main web girdles that make them strong as a 4 bolt main. best bet is shell out some bucks for the "new Boss" motor its a 4 bolt main block. see fordracing.com
