The kind you want is exactly the wrong kind for a new driver in my opinion. I would start out with the biggest, heaviest rust bucket you can find. The reason is that the bigger the car, the safer it is no matter what kind of accident you have and there's a good chance you may have an accident. I would recommend a used Crown Victoria or Grand Marquis which are very inexpensive to buy and repair. However, if you haven't taken your driver's test, make sure to take the test on the smallest subcompact car you can borrow or rent.

Small and sporty are totally doable for a new driver. Check on a used Ford Probe or Mazda MX-6 base or SE 4 cyl coupes. Easily found used and cheap some with low mileage, they are sporty looking but with a lower powered and better mileage engine than the GT's which are pretty quick with the v6's. Also a good choice are the 95-00 Dodge Avenger and Chrysler Sebring. Also available with a 4cyl engine they are pretty well built and have a 5 star frontal crash rating.
