A 350 would give you the most bang for the buck. The swap is pretty easy. The serpentine belt setup will bolt right on to the 350. The 350 will bolt to your existing transmission without any adapters. Several companies make headers for the swap. Holley makes a throttle body that will fit and plug into the factory wiring harness and work with the factory computer.

i own a shop,and you have one of the best engines Chevy ever built in it, so id up grade it,there's so many things you can do to the 4.3 that ,there's no limit on how much power you can get out of it,its a 350 engine with two cylinders took off it,it has the same bore and all as a 350 ,but do the up grades on it,they can be made to literally out run a 350 real easy,all i can say is you have a good engine to start with,good luck with it.

This all depends on your experience level, and down time if this is your daily driver. Dodge man is right you can get lots of power out of your current engine. This can be done in short steps, instead of a complete engine swap. Which would mean a undetermined down time while doing the swap. My suggestion would be if this is your daily driver, to upgrade your current engine. If this isnt your daily driver, then the sky's the limit, and your wallet also. The engine swap isnt to complicated, but dont let anyone fool you it isnt just a bolt on deal. I put a 350 in a '89 S-10, they dont make a bolt on exhaust for it. And a stock 6cyl trans wont hold up!!!!!! So you have to swap a trans from a similar year vehiclethat had a V8, if it is a auto, to be able to handle the increased power. If it is a manual You can use several different ones, but more mods, easier to stick with a similar one for a V8. Your front engine accesories will bolt on, but you need the correct engine mounts for this conversion. Otherwise the engine will not sit in the engine bay properly and it will sit to far back. Most likely you will have to use a low profile electric cooling fan, as there isnt much room between the engine and the radiator. If your trans is not the same length you will have to shorten the drive shaft, or have a new one made that is longer. You may have to either move, customize, or make a new trans mount.
