If its automatic, its a C4 standard transmission. YOu can find a local mechanic who rebuilds transmissions for about $200. Its a very common transmission albeit old.I own a transmission shop, and believe it or not; these C-4 transmissions are now getting hard to come by. There may be plenty of them out there, but finding a good core to rebuild is getting harder by the day. Your best bet to get a transmission would be to contact a company named "TCI" and they can fix you right up. You can expect to pay quite a lot for one. If you have the one that came in it, and it is still in good enough shape to have rebuilt, then that would be the route to go as far as cost is concerned. The price for them start at about $600.00 (plus shipping and core charge) on up to $1,5000.00 or better. It takes more than $200 to purchase the parts to rebuild one the right way, so if you bought one for that little of money, then you are not getting a rebuilt one. Another thing to keep in mind is; You will need to at least use a remanufactured torque converter too, and that is about $100 plus core. Be concerned with the cooler inside the radiator, as it is VERY inmprtant to get it cleaned out good, or you will wreck your new transmission.

I have a 1965 Ford fairlane 289 with the C-4.I went to Advance auto parts and purchased mine(with a exchange)it cost $600 with a 1 year warranty,more without exchange(?150) and more for a 3 year warr.I installed a shift kit and been running it hard ever since,They are rebuilt transmissions,but well worth the money.What is a cheap and easy way to get horsepower out of my mitsubishi eclipse?
The C4 was the stock model but a C6 , fmx , Early AOD that doesnt need the electronic control would work fine . Myself I would use a C6 for performance or the AOD for a daily driver .More Questions & Answers ...
