Question:
I've got a 700R, rebuilt 2 years ago and is now not downshifting to 1. Cellinoids okay. Thought if the housing and other measurments matched up I'd put a manual in as a toy. Has LT1, posi-traction. Any ideas where to get one would be appreciated if it's do-able. Thanks for help.

I own a transmission shop, and can tell you this; to change it all over to a manual would be a nightmare to do. You can do it, and it can be done, but you would run into so many problems that it wouldn't be worth the money to do it.If the 700R-4 is not down shifting, then it is a matter of changing the fluid & filter, and adding a bottle of some stuff called "Lubegard". You can purchase lubegard at a parts store. Your porblem with the 700 is just sticking valves in the vlave body, and/or the governor. When they removed the whale oil from transmission fluid it made it unstable as far as lasting, and tarnish problems became the enemy. A 700 is a touchy transmission anyway, and one speck of dirt in the oil will wreak havoc. Since they took away the whale oil, one must now change the fluid & filter more than usual, and add the lubegard to replace the lubricate properties not found in conventional fluids. A sticking govorner is probably the culprit, and this can be repaired without removing the transmission. The problems you are having with the 700 are not really a problem, especially if you compare it to the problems you will be faced with if you try to change it over to a manual transmission. Do what I say, and you will be glad you did. Your 700 has many miles left on it.
Glad to help out, Good Luck!

I haven't seen a 700R before.Sports exhaust on an Auto BMW?
anything is doable if you want to make it happen. You may want to check out Kesler for the transmission etc. but being as this car was never offered with a manual trans, know that you are looking at alot of custom fabricationMore Questions & Answers ...
