Static timing should be 5 deg. atdc. Dont ever set it running. Actually, there should be TWO timing marks on your crank pulley. One is TDC, the other is 5 after.

If its the original (AE case) 1600cc engine that the 71 vw beetle came with and still in its unaltered state, bone stock to use a better word, the enitial timing is 5 degrees ATDC. I hope this helps. Any chiltons manual will tell you the same info. FYI

you can set it btdc or atdc 8 degrees. setting it btdc will make your car run slower but give it more torque like if you are pulling a trailer. haha!! if you set it 8 degrees atdc it will advance your timing and your car will run faster. most turbo vehicles run retard (btdc) because they get all there acceleration from the turbo and torque from retartding the timing. horsepower tv explains it pretty good with the cummins turbo diesel
