The older Porsches were a bit finicky and needed quite a lot of maintenance. The new Porsches are designed to need very little maintenance. Our 2003 goes in ever 15,000 miles. This is better than our BMW (13,000 miles between service). Our Mercedes would go in every 12,000 miles.
If you are considering a Boxster S, you need to consider why you are buying one. If you are looking for great handling, this is your car. If you want exceptional braking, this is your car. If you want very strong acceleration (pulls strong to 150+), this is your car. If you want a solid feeling car, this is your car. If you want Toyota/Honda reliability and low cost of ownership, this is not your car. If you want a luxury car ride, this is not your car. If you are buying the car for eye appeal, this is a great car, but Porsche drivers won't like you (though most Porsche drivers don't know how to get the most from their car and bought theirs for the same reason). A very interesting thing happens when you drive a Porsche - You feel so good - You feel there is nothing that bothers you - You find yourself driving very fast, going around corners fast and braking late. You become tranformed into believing you're Michael Schumacher!

What Greg so ineloquently said is that if your wallet isn't deep enough to easily afford the car and you are worried about follow on maintenance costs, SHOP FOR SOMETING ELSE!This is an aspirational car and is treated by the sales staff and owners different than other workaday cars.

Just the way it is. They don't sell discount parts and small shops that work on them charge more than the dealers! The customers actually like it that way and brag about their mechanics at parties!

As for durability, you may want to check Consumer Reports April issue for reliability ratings. You may want to hold your breath--if I remember correctly, that rating may make you want to buy a Miata!
