Late 90's BMW 3 series vs. 5 series?

I heard that the 3-series BMW had more problems in the mid and late 90's (97-99) and the 5 series had great reviews. I was just wondering if this was true because I'm hoping that I won't have to spend as much to maintain a 1998 5-series BMW

The 98 might be OK but somewhere along the way they started making the sequential 6-speed transmission coupled with a drive by wire computer throttle. That combination causes an objectionable hesitation when you demand sudden acceleration, like getting onto a highway, or left turn in front of oncoming traffic, passing on country roads, etc...

99 Grand Cherokee, no power windows working, driver's locks not working, other locks work?

The hesitation is about 2-3 seconds and sometimes can be critical. The dealer can't do anything about it.

The 3-series and 5-series shared the same engine/transmission so those problems aside: The 3-series had some torn rear chassis issues and 5-series can have electrical or heating sysem woes. 5-ers go through suspension rubber quicker. With any used BMW, really go through the cooling system and watch for leaks.
