If it is drivable, bring it to a dealer,let him go over the entire car and see what they give you for trade in value. They will tell you what it needs and then figure out how much is it going to cost you to keep it on the road for a while. Do it a few times, since you don't have a honest mechanic of your own.If you can get a low mileage transmission form a junkyard, then all you would need to do is have it serviced after getting it insatlled in the van, this might cost less than a new transmission.
check the level of fluid on trans with engine running. when they changed thr rad. they let out about one quart from the lines. so that will make it pause at stop signs or when you first start it up and put it in gear. also make sure all plugs are pluged in around were they were working on the radiator

Some transmission shops are notorious for replacing trnsmissions when it isn't really necessary. They try to sell a transmission for anything that comes in the doors, whether it can be fixed or not. They do that to make more money since it's a bigger job rather than just fixing a small problem.

You can let the dealer go over the entire car and tell you what they think needs replacing, but this should be free. Just have to be careful as they sometimes try too aggressively to sell stuff and list a bunch of stuff that is questionable instead of actually needing replacing.

Chances are, they'll look it over anyway, and if there's something bad wrong, the tech will tell you. With the inspection, they'll look for anything and everything that CAN be done, instead of just what NEEDS to be done.

Since you are a woman and not mechanically inclined.I say, Sell it to highest bidder,or scrap it.The junkyards are paying really well for vehicles lately.I deal with used vehicles everyday, repairing and selling.Since your van is a 91.It more than likely has about 150,000 miles on it and may be more.It is too old with many other parts that are gonna be going and nickel and dime you to death.Putting a trans in even by a repair garage will be around $1,100 aand the van isn't worth much more than $400.00 to $500.00 in good shape.Sell it or scrap it and find somethng else.My 2001 Chevy Blazer 4X4 sways when driving. Simple.You need to know how much the van is actually worth. Look up EBAY: COMPLETED LISTINGS, find a van like yours with similar mileage and how much it sold for, find as many as you can and average the price, this will be a reality as to what your AS van is worth.

hi,,, problems going into drive? this might be cheap to fix. go to your local automotive store, get two quarts of 'trans-x' transmission additive. and four qts of xmission fluid and if applicable, a filter for your transmission and a new pan gasket. drain the fluid,replace old filter inside with the new one, wipe clean pan dry. wipe dry bottom of transmission, reinstall pan with new gasket... refill transmission with the first two quarts of trans-x . top off fluid with regular fluid. start engine and excercise xmission from p n d 1 2 3. with engine still running put it in p and check fluid level. refill if needed. drive car... xmission should go to drive normally after a few miles..recheck fluid level. total cost of repair ... about 50bucks. :) p.s. i wonder if the radiator replaced caused the transmission to fail... if the new radiator fails to cool the trany fluids?? two to three months top to distroy it.. just a thought.. but if so., the problem will be reversed... comming out of drive... ahhh never mind. good luck.
