Question:
I have a 94 VW Golf. I have a problem sometimes. It wont change into a new gear until I pump the clutch a few times. It uses brake fluid a little. I have had to refill it recently. Is it the clutch or the master cylinder?
Thanks.

If it is leaking, then it is probably the clutch master or slave cylinder. Possibly leaking in the lines. Did you put the proper fluid type in it? If you mix d.o.t. type 3 and type 4, they will turn into a gooey sludge.Do you want to get stuck by the side of the road? If so, buy a GM product.?
You have a hydraulic clutch? It uses fluid as well. It wears out as well. The master cylinder is a different unit up on the firewall mounted in front of a black disk shaped(size of a frisbee) which has a bunch (4) steel lines protruding out of it. That is your master cylinder (which involves the braking system)only. When you snap off the wire holder holding down the gold cap, you will see the level of your brake fluid. It should be right to the top.
The clutch is mounted elsewhere. You have a leak in the lines that need to be fixed.
