Its about 30 minutes oneway from Hawthorne, NJ to Downtown Port Authority. They have several park and ride lots nearby the Hawthorne area.

why is it that when your in a rush to go somewhere you always get stuck at every set of traffic lights?

The train is by far the quickest method. Unless it's off hours, any park & ride is at the mercy of traffic. You can get on the train in Hawthorne, Switch in Secacus, and be into Penn Station in no time. Another option, take the Hawthorne train to Hoboken, and jump on PATH to eitther downtown, or midtown.
I live in Bergen Co, and the train is the only way to go.
