Why is there such disparity between gas prices instate and interstate?

In our city there is a variance of 50 cents, 13 miles away it is 90 cents more. It is not due to remote locales, all gas is the same wholesale price, why the disparity, and why is allowed?? Also when gas goes down it takes awhile to reflect at the pump, but if it goes up it starts instantly. We are always told it goes by what was already paid, so why doesn't that go both ways??

Larneeb, I feel your pain. It's called price gouging. Thruways and Super highways maintain that it costs more to deliver fuel to these locations. Last fall in NYS. people were really seaming about gas prices. A local TV station found that our state has only six suppliers. Twenty years ago there were twenty three. NYS kills us with taxes on fuel. The taxes are sucked off to pay for funding things that they (taxes) were never intended to be used for. Call your Congressman or State Senator and ask for the accounting of the tax trail. You'll heave your lunch. I'm sorry but I get pi--ed talking about these things. Here's a true story. I left Elmira, NY. last fall where gas was $2.65 per gal.. Three hours later I entered Williams Grove Speedway in PA.( five miles south of Harrisburg). Gas prices were $2.15 per. gal..

There was an email circulating when the prices were really high last summer explaining if we all got together and boycotted Exxon/Mobil they would be forced to lower their prices and all the other gas stations would have to follow. It didn't happen, but it probably could, and probably should. Its up to us, the consumer how much we will pay.
