What are the the black cables places on highway asphalt used for?

Question:
I have seen this many times. As I drive down a highway like SR40 or US441 there will be a black cable from the median all the way to the white line in the slow lane. They are usually attached to a highway or street sign. What are they called and what are they used for? FYI I live in Florida. Thanks

They are placed by road crews to count axles traveling over a given section of roadway. It will give them a count of the number of vehicles using the road to determine maintenance schedules and upgrades for the road.

I am not 100% positive, but I think they are used to count the number of cars that use a certain stretch of road. This helps to determine road planning, etc.
