I often do if it's safe to do so, but have found that very few people are prepared to do so. It strikes me as a little strange.

With regards to changing lanes to help others change lanes, I've not really every experienced this problem. I find it much more likely that people are sitting in the middle lane making it harder for me to pass!!

Why do people lane hog - that's what drives me mad?! On a dual carriageway - speed limit of 50mph there was a woman doing 50 in the right hand lane - wrong! I was doing the same speed and was right up behind her - would she move - OH NO! I flashed my lights at her - she ignored me - I did it again - she gestured at me and I then ended up undertaking her. I know this is wrong (I'm in the UK) but I really didn't have much choice other than slowing right down or hitting her car with mine! When I undertook she hurled abuse at me about the speed limit being 50mph. I didn't have a problem with that but she was in my way, if she'd been in the left hand land I would have easily got past her. Some people should basically never pass their driving tests!Left lane for passing, middle lane for cruising, right for getting off, and for the semislow drivers...

I do it (wherever possible). It just seems like common courtesy and makes the drivers life easier as they enter the motorway. It stops them from having to slow down after they have built up enough speed to enter the motorway at a relatively fast speed. It also helps the drivers on the motorway keep to a continued speed instead of them slowing down.

I do to allow people on to the motorway if I am in the inside lane and my experience has shown that most people do do this. However, I don't often do it to allow people into an outside lane, they should only move out if there is a big enough gap. Slowing down in the outside lane to allow them in can cause accidentsits like anything - dont hog the middle lane

Lane changing is a difficult one. Far too many of us seem to hog the middle lane. This is born of a fear of being trapped between two slow moving trucks with no hope ever of getting out into the middle and thus being able to pass them.

At best, motorway driving in the 21st century is pure hell. I first hit the M1 [our first brand new motorway] in c1960 in my E-Type Jaguar - a roaring monster V8. That was 'real motoring'. The average family saloon then might manage about 70 to 80mph - meanwhile my Jag could reach speeds of around 120-130mph - talk about vroom! Blimey.

To be honest, if you want to enjoy motoring, try the A-Roads. For something really exciting, hit the B-Roads with their twists and turns and narrowness. But, do it in a high powered sports car. Shrieking around a blind bend at 80mph is not a good idea. You either die hitting the solid as rock farm tractor coming the other way or crash into the ditch on the other side, with airbag firmly wedged against dead face.

Yes, I do those, but like you, find that I am a rarity. I also obey the Give Way to oncoming traffic signs that others seem to ignore.Good manners are fast disappearing from our behaviour, especially on the road.
