Let's define overtaking?

In my opinion, If you are on one lane and I am on another. I have traffic in front of me, you don’t. You stay in your lane and pass me. That is not an overtaking. An overtaking is when both vehicles are on the same track and one wants to get ahead. This usually entails one of the vehicles having to change lanes.

According to few friends, even if both vehicles are running in 2 separate lanes and one goes ahead of other, it is termed as overtaking.
