Because you exit and enter the highway from that lane. You need slower traffic to merge. Then you can move to the center lane and speed up.We don't hear of road rage so much any more, do you think it is occuring less often?

It is easier for the passee to see the passer if they are coming up on their left side. Consistancy helps prevent accidents.I would think that it is because the right lane has traffic that is merging in or slowing down to exit; or if it is on surface streets because people turning.

cos you are driving sitting on the left side and do not have the same visibility on right as you have on left side of road. Hence, the right lane is the slow lane, you don't want people zooming by you on the right side when your visibility is restricted on that side.It is a slower lane becuse that is where the traffic anticipating an exit rides. They have to be ready to exit and slow down, so generally that lane is slower. If you don't have an exit and have n reason to stop, you stay to the left, thus less slow down. Also in the right lane, traffic also gets onto the highway, therefore, you have cars trying to get up to highway speed, and going slower at the time. With the merging on and cars getting off, the right lane is a good lane for doing the speed limit or less. It is safer that way for everyone.

There is not officially a fast or slow lane. They are numbered 1 through however many lanes there are . With the lane on the left in the US being #1 and the rest numbered all the way out to the right. The reason it has the name the slow lane is because it was intended to be a declaration lane and acceleration lane for getting on and off the freeway. And in some states where there are only 2 lanes the right lanes are for slower traffic so that the left lane is open for people to passBecause that's where you enter and leave the highway from, its much safer that way. Also, we all need to agree on which is the fast and which is the slow lane, and you pass on the left (ideally, where i live these rules are often ignored)

Because the left lane is used for passing. And you are to only use the left lane for passing. The right is for regular driving. But if you come upon a car moving slowly you are to signal to the left lane passing the car in the right lane then once past signal back into the right lane. in theory, it is supposed to be just as fast as the center and left lanes. however, during peak traffic hours, the volume of cars entering, merging and exiting greatly reduce the travel speed of the right lane. also as a few others have mentioned, it allows for better rearward visibility for slower drivers to keep to the right in an effort to yield the center and left lanes to drivers who are travelling at a higher rate of speed or consistently passing other motorists.More Questions & Answers ...
