I agree I like the second or third week September. The brutal heat is gone from the deserts, snow hasn't hit the Rockies yet if you chose to go through Denver and tornado season is pretty much over if you plan to go through OKC.In addittion motel rates are down a bit and some of the popular spots - Grand Canyon- are experiencing fewer visitors.

It all depends on weather your traveling with kids that are in school or adults. With no kids i think the best time is in February, you will leave new york where the weather is cold and after you pass by north and south Carolina you will have warm weather and by the time you get to Miami it hot all the way to los angeles, i know that because i went in February from New Jersey, and by the way its approximately 36 hour drive, if you have at least 2 drivers, my husband would drive 3 hours then rest while i drive 3 hours,Started across the north in June, and stayed north the whole trip...but watch the weather anyway..seems like it has changed and become more unpredictable .
