All the time! I drive a small car and have noticed the forest of traffic growing taller and bigger every year. How did we "survive" in the past with smaller cars? People borrowed their friend's truck when they needed it. Now a lot of people buy big or tall just because it feels better high up where you can see and sometimes it comes in handy too.

Do you ever feel strange when people stare at you on the subway ?

Every time I drive! I drive a full-size 4500 lb. van. My main reason is safety...if you hit me, I'm gonna win! To me, it's not worth risking my life/safety to save a few bucks in gas. I was in the salvage business.I saw what happens to small cars in accidents.and now matter how good a driver we are, we're all gonna be in an accident sooner or later. When my turn comes...I'm walking away from it. In addition to that, I like the comfort of a large vehicle; I often need the cargo capacity (otherwise I'd often have to tow a trailer), and in the long run, a large vehicle is actually cheaper to maintain, as it is much more durable- it requires fewer repairs over time and lasts longer (less manufacturing/resource use)...so in the end, I think it all balances out- if we're going to drive motorized vehicles.the only real difference after all the factors are considered, are safety and comfort- so why not opt for the better?
