Living car-free?

Question:
Does anyone here not have a car? If so, how do you get around? Was your lifestyle by choice or by circumstance? Do you like your car-free lifestyle?

Trying to plan a trip..help with mileage?

I currently have a car, but I'm thinking of getting rid of it because it's broken down a lot in the past six months and I've shelled out a ton of money just to fix it. As a result, I don't have enough money for a new one. I live in a large city that has a decent transit system, and that makes me wonder if I should just not buy a new car at all and rely on transit to get around, along with biking, walking and occasional rides with friends. Before I make any decisions, I'd like to know your experiences.

Motorways in the uk?

I do not have a car and I rely on public transit and walking to get around. The lifestyle was by choice when I had to sign over my last car to the repair shop because I was broke.

Over the hills and far, far, far away...?

I had a friend who allowed me to borrow her car when she worked. I had a falling out with this friend and I lost access to her car. My family will not allow me to drive their car due to fears that I may be arrested or worse.

Which is better ,commuting by rail from suburbs or being the city proper?

My suggestion is to go car-free if you can. The train and plane allow you to reach distant cities and bank the money you would have spent on insurance and gas. Now that I'm no longer broke, I'm interested in buying a car but I do not look forward to the expenses.

How much is gas in your area?

I don't have a car. I get around by bus, walking and sometimes bicycle. Sometimes I get rides from friends. I live in the metro Atlanta area and the transit system is horrible. MARTA only covers two small counties and Cobb County where I live isn't one of them. The local buses are horrible. So horrible in fact that I have walked long distances just because my patience with the buses and waiting for them often goes to my wits end. I get around by foot or bus because I don't have a car, I don't have the money for a car(I am a college student so money is always an issue). It would not matter because I don't have a license either. I would not mind the car-free lifestyle of the government in metro Atlanta would update the transit system just like New York, DC, or San Francisco. The area is not really pedestrian friendly place either so crossing the street is dangerous even when you have the right of way. Even traveling on bicycle is horrendous(and hard because the metro Atlanta area is so hilly in most places). As for the situation you are in, you live an area where if you don't have a car, it's okay because there are other decent ways to get around. I think you might want to take the transit system and save your money for a new car. It's better than where I live where not having a car major hardship. The resources are there. My suggestion would be to save your money and use the transit system in place until money for a car is there. It can be done.

Do you know the way to get to ...?

I don't drive either but I do have transportation its called
a bicycle -good exercise and I also use Public transit as well
and lots times the buses now have bike racks which
means I can ride my bike to a bus stop then take bus somewhere
then hop back my bicycle!
and boy do I save on gas!
